Time to Eat!

One of the key questions I ask clients is whether they are hungry in the morning, for breakfast. It may seem like a little thing, and it is certainly a common thing, but not feeling hungry in the morning is actually an indication of imbalance. We SHOULD feel hungry in the morning! It is the longest span from when we ate last, and it is when we need to fuel our Yang energy for the day.

Some people think that if they are not hungry and they skip breakfast and then start with lunch it doesn’t make a difference overall, because they felt fine at the time. But it does, and over time it will show up in your health.

Each hour of the day is governed by the function of a different organ system and channel. The Spleen and Stomach time is between 7:00 and 11:00 am. 7:00 to 9:00 is Stomach time, so the best time to ingest it, and 9:00 to 11:00 is Spleen time, the best time to digest it.

Morning is the best, most natural time to have that largest, most substantial meal of the day. Having a large meal in the evening, right when the body is transitioning from the warm, light, active, Yang phase into the cool, dark, quiet, Yin phase is the opposite. This can tax the Spleen, when what we want to be doing is supporting the Spleen to gain the nutrients from that meal to live our healthiest possible life. So go ahead and have that nice big breakfast to start the day and fuel you up for whatever is in store.

(In the time of COVID: Standing at your computer. Doing zoom meetings. Working on home projects. Parenting. And hopefully some moments for yourSELF too!)
