Earth Day - from the Arctic to the Equator (Apr 23 2024)

In celebration of Earth Day, I want to share some of my recent sights of Costa Rica with you. I wish I could also share the sounds - a symphony of frogs from our private frog pond beneath the balcony of our amazing treehouse tent in the rainforest of La Tigra; the torrents of rain and wind on the metal roof when the “cold front” of 26 degrees C swept through; the singing, calling, twittering voices of all the birds and insects of Monteverde’s cloud forests. And the smells - oh the smells - of the lush biodiversity of half a million species, 6% of the world’s total, all within 0.03% of the Earth’s surface…

I love the Yukon and our nature here. Seeing eagles and foxes and ravens in our neighbourhood is beautiful. The air is crisp and clean and clear. The forests are vast and the rivers and lakes shine like crystals. And after 17 years here, I am at home in it. And sometimes it takes seeing a new place with new eyes to fully comprehend and wake up one’s appreciation for all of it anew. Our planet and all of its inhabitants are truly awe inspiring, and the rights of nature - of the trees and the animals and the waterways - deserve to be here and to thrive every bit as much as we do.

Not only that, but we are so interconnected. And if we want to wake up to the sweet sounds of songbirds in Canada, we need to help take care of the ecosystems of Costa Rica - from the forests, to the animals, to the waterways - and elsewhere. Everywhere.

I hope you will click on the links above to see some of the places of Costa Rica that captured my heart. And enjoy my photos below!
