Dong Chong Xia Cao / Cordyceps

I’ve saved the best for last! This is just an amazing herb, with the neatest name. Native to the high Himalayan plateaus of Tibet, it is known in Tibetan as “yartsa gunbu”, and in Chinese as Dong Chong Xia Cao - which translates as “Winter Worm, Summer Grass”.

Traditionally, it is a fungi which grows from the head of a caterpillar. (You can go ahead and re-read that). In our modern times new ways of cultivating the fungi have spared the caterpillar. The complete mushroom-insect combination is still available, but is quite rare and extremely expensive, so the caterpillar-free version is a great and still effective alternative.

Its nickname of “Himalayan Viagra” gives a hint of how Cordyceps sinensis has gained popularity in the West, where it is also well known for athletic performance enhancement (through increasing respiratory ability, stamina, and metabolism of lactic acid). In fact, it was through sports that this herb gained its international interest in 1993, when it was discovered that Chinese women’s runners were shattering world records while taking this herb. Additionally, studies have revealed its antiviral and antibacterial properties, and also show evidence for its use as a tonic to help increase energy, support the heart, and enhance the immune system.

It is considered a very powerful but also very balanced herb in Chinese Medicine as it tonifies both the Kidney Yin and Yang energies of the body, along with the Lungs. It is unique in that its life cycle includes peaks in both Summer and Winter, reflecting this balance of energies within. It helps to invigorate the breath and enhance the energies of reproduction, growth and regeneration. Traditionally it is used for chronic lung disorders such as asthma, as well as to increase physical stamina, energy levels, endurance, sexual function, and to support illness prevention and recovery.
